While Warren loves fast road bikes and the latest gravel bikes, he also believes electric bikes are the future of transport. He has covered all the major innovations in cycling this century, and reported from launches, trade shows and industry events in Europe, Asia, Australia, North American and Africa. Over the years, Warren has written about thousands of bikes and tested more than 2,500 – from budget road bikes to five-figure superbikes. In his time as a cycling journalist, Warren has written for Mountain Biking UK, What Mountain Bike, Urban Cyclist, Procycling, Cyclingnews, Total Bike, Total Mountain Bike and T3. He’s also a regular presenter on the BikeRadar Podcast and on BikeRadar’s YouTube channel. Having been testing bikes for more than 20 years, Warren has an encyclopedic knowledge of road cycling and has been the mastermind behind our Road Bike of the Year test for more than a decade. ![]() Warren Rossiter is BikeRadar and Cycling Plus magazine’s senior technical editor for road and gravel. Spherical Technology allows the helmet's outer liner to rotate around the inner liner during a crash, and also allows. Giro’s other premium helmets, the Aether and Synthe, are all about aerodynamic and cooling efficiency at speed, but the mantra behind the Helios is safety in a more appealing, stylish package that maxes out on traditional safety elements too. The heart of the Helios's extraordinary design and performance is Spherical Technology, which utilizes a ball-and-socket design powered by MIPS, the market-leading protection system that can help to reduce rotational forces. With the Spherical Protection Technology we can achieve all of those goals without compromise.” Gaining added protection but compromising on fit, comfort, light weight and cooling. With that choice they sometimes make a trade-off. Giro’s brand manager Eric Ritcher told us: “We’ve found that riders over the years have increasingly chosen helmets with additional protection tech. The Aether is designed to provide maximum cooling at pro-rider level speeds and conditions, so for those still wanting the highest level of protection and comparable cooling, but not riding fast enough to feel the benefits, the Aether may not be the ideal choice. Until now we’d only seen Giro’s unique two-piece shell with its ball-and-socket construction on its pro-level Aether helmet. Giro Helios Spherical helmet first ride review Giros Helios helmet brings Spherical technology to a lower priced helmet. This is because there are differences in test methods, impact conditions, risk calculations, and impact weightings specific to each sport. The outer EPS liner slides in all directions independent of the base EPS liner. ![]() The score values in these ratings are not comparable to score values in our helmet ratings for other sports. ![]() The overall score estimates the number of concussions the average person would see if they experienced identical impacts at rates matching their weightings while cycling.Ī lower score indicates better helmet performance. Each risk is multiplied by its weighting factor and then summed together to compute an overall score. We compute concussion risk from measured peak linear acceleration and rotational velocity for each test. Velocities were selected to reflect common cyclist head impact velocities based on helmet damage replication studies.Įach lab impact is weighted based on how often a cyclist might experience a similar impact. We test 6 locations that are dispersed around the helmet at medium and and high impact energies. We measure linear acceleration and rotational velocity for each impact, which are correlated to concussion risk. A drop tower designed to match helmet-to-ground characteristics in cycling is used to test the helmets. We rate each bike helmet based on the results of 24 impact tests in our laboratory. Our ratings are an independent and objective assessment of helmet performance for consumers, free from manufacturer influence. ![]()
